I knew a couple who were enjoying playing in the band. I play euphonium, electric bass and mallet percussion. I play a different instrument in two bands. I have been concert manager and I like to help file music and prepare music for the conductors. I enjoyed being on the social committee, too. It makes my day to attend a practice.

I joined PNHB on day one in 2002. I started on flute (no sound!), switched to clarinet, and haven’t stopped since. Over 25 years, I’ve played in multiple bands, volunteered as treasurer, helped new members, and made over 100 friends. Band is more than music — it’s community, joy, and healing. I can’t imagine life without it.”

“Music, community, and healthy aging — all in one place.”

As a lifelong drummer, I always played by feel — from blues to jazz to Dixieland. But when I bought a double bass with a small inheritance, I decided to truly learn music.

After attending a PNHB concert, I approached conductor Sal Castiglione to ask if my bass could fit in. He welcomed me warmly, and since then, I’ve learned to read music, perform in various bands — including Swing Set — and even taken up percussion and timpani in the full band.

As a physician, I truly believe that playing music delays cognitive decline and improves quality of life. PNHB helps over 200 seniors stay sharp, connected, and joyful.
